The Golf Swing Video: Do You Have Enough Guts to Watch Your Own Swing?

One of the scariest things I have ever done as a golfer is watched my own golf swing. After being told by a close friend that it can be very helpful to do so, I finally got up the nerve to tape myself. This was the first hurdle. The second was actually sticking the tape in the VCR and watching the video. I held off for several weeks, but after having a very difficult time on the course one day, I figured I had nothing to lose. Watching myself make mistakes on film was tough, but in the end it was the best thing I could have done to improve my swing. Although there are many elements to study in golf, I hope I can convince you that one of the most important things to study is yourself! See below to find out how to create your own golf swing video and the benefits you’ll reap if you do.

Taping Your Hit

The first thing you need to do is simple: videotape yourself hitting the ball. However, you will want to tape your swing in two different ways. The first way entails taping yourself performing practice swings and taking practice shots. The reason for taping your practice swing is because we often hit differently when we are not facing the pressure of the score. Often times our practice swings appear to be quite good on video. Since I get nervous taking an actual shot, I found my practice shots to be far better because I wasn’t experiencing any anxiety while hitting. The second way you will want to tape yourself is while playing on the golf course. You will likely notice a difference between the practice shot and the one you took on the course. Study any differences you notice in form or results. Identifying what went right and wrong will make it easy to see how you can improve. When I taped myself, I was stunned with how different my two shots were, and I think you will be, too.

Know Your Own Swing

There are many benefits to knowing your swing. If you are as big a golf fan as I am then I am sure you have spent hours watching pros on TV. While it is helpful to observe advanced players to see how they hit the ball, if you don’t even know how you are hitting the ball, there is no way of knowing what to adjust. Take the time to get to know your own swing first and only then will you will be able to recognize differences between your swing that of a pro. By identifying where your swing diverges from the ideal, you can begin making changes to your stroke gradually. In fact, many people find simply relaxing on the course can make a profound difference. Now that you understand the benefits of videotaping your swing, hopefully you will get out there and do so! It really is the best way to get better. After studying your practice and game-time swings, you’ll know exactly where you need to improve, and you’ll be ready to get out there and practice again, only with a much more targeted game plan this time around. Start today and I guarantee you’ll be seeing positive results in no time! Good luck.
