Improve Your Golf Swing with These Five Simple Tips

Do you feel like you are stuck at your current score of 85, 95, or 100? Are you ready to take your golf game to the next level? Would you love to be able to hit the ball powerfully and on target, every time? The best way to improve your game is to improve your swing. Although it may seem like a daunting task, if you put your mind to it, a smooth and powerful golf swing is within your reach. You may be skeptical, and rightly so. In fact, 80% of golfers don’t even know how pro golfers generate the immense power in their swings. This is because most explanations provided in instruction videos and books are convoluted and difficult to follow. Luckily, we’ve outlined the following tips in easy-to-understand language, and hopefully these tips will help as you begin your journey towards an improved golf swing and better game.

Make Sure Your Hands Stay Low

Many golfers make the mistake of allowing their hands to move upward as they follow through with their swing. This is exactly what you do not want to do. By restricting the height of your follow through, you will be able to effectively lower the ball flight. Although you may be tempted to choose a stronger club to weight down your swing, or swing with less force to reduce the height of your swing, neither will fix the problem in the long run. They are temporary changes that don’t address the most important factor, which is your form. To accomplish lower ball flight consistently, keep your hands low in the finish of your swing, and practice as much as you need to until it feels natural.

Analyze Your Golf Swing

One of the best ways to achieve an ideal swing plane is to analyze your own swing plane. Having someone film you is the easiest way to do this. We never get the chance to actually see what we are doing when we strike the ball, but watching your stroke on film can be extremely helpful in revealing where you may be having trouble and what you should focus on. By analyzing your swing plane, you will be able to make sure your swing plane is flattened. Another option to help you establish a correct swing plane is a swing trainer. A swing trainer is a circular pipe device that can be adjusted so that it fits each golfer. In my experience using a swing trainer, I have found it is very easy to use and lets you correct your swing plane with each swing that I made. Another more advanced method of correcting your swing plane is by using a laser light attached to the end of your club handle. The light indicates the direction of the butt of the club and this can also be helpful when analyzing your swing plane.

Let Your Body Provide the Power

The often overlooked reality is that most of a golfer’s power comes from his or her body, not from the arms, as many assume. Therefore, it is crucial to practice powering the club with your body as opposed to your arms and hands. You can do this by putting the club directly behind the ball and holding your body in a standstill position. Then attempt to draw the ball into the air without allowing yourself to take a backswing. Golfers who have a tendency to use their hands to control the club will find this task quite difficult. However, once you begin moving the club with your body instead of your arms, you’ll notice you are able to get the ball in the air more consistently and with less effort. Practicing this exercise will help you become accustomed to relying on your body to power your downswing.

Maintain a Good Posture

Your posture as you hit a golf ball makes a huge difference in the quality of your swing. Simply put, posture refers to how you set up to the ball. If you have a problem with your posture, you are bound to experience difficulties in your swing. Think about your posture before you endeavor to hit the ball. To achieve a good posture, your feet should be shoulder width apart, with your toes pointing slightly outward. You will want minimal knee flex and should avoid locking your legs. Do not allow your shoulders to slouch, keep your back straight, and bend from your hips. Proper posture not only helps your golf swing, it also protects your back. By focusing on maintaining proper posture, keeping your hands and arms low, and using your body to power the swing, there is no doubt you will see immense improvement in your golf swing and a much-needed burst of confidence in your game.
